of eagles past

So we were cruising along Mexican highway
Eagle Pass to Torreon
Former home base of the revolutionistic outlaw
Senor Pancho Villa
And we were doing good and everything
Even talking up a storm
When we came to a desert
Nothing but sand and mountains on each side of the road
Endless sky above, clouds everywhere
But on this day, dry sand beneath my wheels
Step One: Get real greasy
Have fun in some grease and roll around in some antifreeze
Put grease and pebbles and other substances in your hair
Roll around on the concrete or in the dirt
And then, I don't quite remember when,
But Al, my brother-in-law, said he had to pee
I said, "Al, we can't, we're running out of gas."
He said, "We can, or I'll just go out the window."
I pulled over and shut down the vehicle's engine
Here we were: Wife, daughter, bro, and me
Almost out of gas in the desert
Improvise
I stopped at the only place around
and offered 20 bucks for a gallon of gas
The cutthroats looked at me funny
Al said, "Don't do that anymore."
(CH)
Fly! Go away to another country in your mind
Stroll around naked, roll in the soft mud
Cast your fate with real grease
And hum hymns
Lie! Lie around with your face dropped on by little gritty specks
Reaching around for the long-lost slippery wrench
So we moved on
Saw a lot of vehicles sporting natural gas engines
Mountains with places built for the saints and angels to remain
secure in their holiness
By the humans that inhabit the region
If we broke down we would be their bait
We rode a hundred miles through empty desert on empty
Prayed a lot to a not-quite-forgotten god
When we get to the gas station, I say, "Thank you, God…
For putting an extra-large reserve tank on this vehicle."

blood-stained mind
05:36
|

Walking down the lane's rain gutters
my footfalls mark the beat
Christmas morning, yesteryear
I dreamt of Vietnam, Cambodia,
Downtown main street
As I try to clear my mind of rhyme
I find myself at the heart of all matter
Age is made by accepting change or by staying plain
An unwilling batter
(Chorus)
And I think of home again
And wonder, then, how long it's been
Since I've been able to clear my head
To sleep at night in my own bed
Resistant old man, accept the new plan
Take my hand
Like Peter Pan, lead me to some brand new land
(Ch)
A blood-stained mind of feeble design
We trip to the pine
For the cold, dark line
Where I feel the whine of an elephant's spine

I've been dealing in gas lately
I've been selling gasoline
When you pull on through my station
I can tell your oil's clean
I've been looking for you
I've been searching low and high
But I can never see your face in there
When your car comes rolling by
I've been walking with a quiet step
What else can I say?
'Cuz I've been stalking you in my sleep, you see
Where I find you every day
I've been looking for you
I've been searching low and high
But I can never see your face in there
When your car comes rolling by
So as we was holding hands last night
You up and drove away
I was hoping to see myself in there
Driving your hot pink Chevrolet
I've been looking for you
I've been searching low and high
But I can never see your face in there
When your car comes rolling by

this loaded mile

I've Purple Hearts, a hundred
For those who have wondered
Kills, just a few...
If only you knew...
Hunkered down, in No Man's Land
You can't see the man I am
Left out so long to rust
Only you, my Bro, I trust
Somewhere along this loaded mile
Ghosts are walking single file
To some land, high up above
To Jill, my love, my right-hand glove
To hell with "hope" and with "free"
As no one's really expecting me
Returning home? They can't say
But I'll be returning home today
That one mile, lonely walked
While she stood, sat, and talked
A lonely mile, oh, I know
They look so tiny down below

waiting in the wings

I’ll be waiting in the wings for you
You can find me where you always do
I’ll be flying where our hearts are true
Where I’m never feeling bad or blue
I’ll be waiting in the dying gloom
In that tiny little downstairs room
I’ll wait, you’ll never come too soon
Drinking light from the distant moon
(Ch)
Nothing matters as much as love
Sifting softly from above
I’d like to have my bull eaten by your dove
A real newly-fashioned kind of love
See, never let it slip your mind
That, though you’ll decide, my heart
I’ll be sippin’ on my favorite wine,
“Homemade hooch” plays the strangest part
(Ch)
it’s not like I’m gonna cry…
I’ll be waiting in the wings for you
You can find me where you always do
I’ll be flying where our hearts are true
Where I’m never feeling bad or blue
I’ll be waiting in the dying gloom
In that tiny little downstairs room
I’ll wait, you’ll never come too soon
Drinking light from the distant moon

I like good food and nice clothes
Barbecue brisquet sauce on my nose
Rice and beef teriyaki go so good together
Steamed green beans are good in any weather
CH
Whiskey Lady are you coming home?
It's been so long that you've been gone
Said you'd be right back, with Chinese food for two
Whiskey Lady are you coming home?
A nice pint will go good with any text
I like lime juice in mine, but what will Bud think of next?
I like to work hard, really work up a sweat
Think about that chicken fried steak with gravy from the lady in the hair net
CH
Whiskey Lady are you coming home?
Whiskey Lady are you coming home?
I'm holding out for Chinese food with you
Whiskey Lady are you coming home?
Whiskey Lady...
You said you liked good food and nice clothes
Barbecued brisquet sauce on your nose

texan oak

We rubbed two sticks together
The cat sits on the sofa, getting wetter
The grate that holds the fire couldn’t be better
(Ch)
Have you seen the lights of Pelacone?
(To lift my Irish love for loss)
The dreamy nights in Pelacone?
(I’ll give you my bladder)
I’ve set my sights on Pelacone…
(To see my child’s beautiful eyes, I’ll lend you my ladder)
We placed our fire between two stones
Said “goodbye” to our cojones
Left our place for Al Jarrone’s
Spent the night in Pelacone
(Ch)
We left, the fire couldn’t be hotter
I stole those logs left in your loft
Cottonwood by the cord, don’t even bother
Texan oak is free of cost
To hold my heart you’ll need my soul
To help offset the roll
We need to talk about our love
And how they stole our faithful glove
How they lied upon the stand
Patty, Bailey and Christine ran…

your wild blue water
04:44

Can you take off your shades for me?
And I’ll disappear into your eyes
Please remove that sunglass
From those that you disguise
Let me gaze into your space
Your thoughts, I can’t replace
And love will raise me up
High above, my soaring spirit’s lost
(Ch)
Graze me in your green, green fields
Kiss me with your wild blue water
Hold out your arms to me
Electrifying embrace, set me free
Let me hear your laughter, toulepe truffels
Compose for me your darking troubles
Clearly display the courage I seek
So this lucky lion can’t squeak
Hold me in your eyes
So I can hear you say
I’m leaving in your eyes right now
Maybe I’ll return some day
True love is the gold
A glass of our love will hold
our hearts, if we allow
It strength to hold our sacred vow
Can you take off your shades for me?
And I’ll disappear into your eyes
Please remove that sunglass
From those that you disguise
Let me gaze into your space
Your thoughts, I can’t replace
And love will raise me up
High above, my soaring spirit’s lost

Fishing for cod out by the ocean
I'd taken up this notion
That the risks were too great
I sat out and I wondered
If hell should shake us under
If I could even relate
(Ch)
I'd taken my sweet time
Studied every crime
Of things that gone wrong
But by then I knew
That chances were few
You'd ever hear this in a song
Now I just pretend
Somewhere near the end
You can catch my drift
Now I just pretend
Somewhere near the end
You will give me a lift
Fishing for cod out by the ocean
Up in this tree without a notion
Of ever coming down
I ain't never coming down
